Nikon Z 135mm F/1.8 S Plena Lens

Portrait sessions have taken on a different feel since I started using this lens. The separation between my subject and the background is striking, especially when photographing people outdoors with trees, lights, or distant scenery behind them. Skin tones look pleasing, fine details are well defined, and the background blur has a soft, rounded character that gives portraits a natural sense of depth without distracting from the person in focus.
What stands out most at f/1.8 is how much flexibility I have in dimmer settings. Indoor portraits and late afternoon sessions are easier to manage, and I can keep the background nicely softened without relying on an artificial backdrop. Focus locks onto my subjects quickly, even when they move a little during conversation, which helps me capture relaxed expressions rather than constantly asking people to hold still.
The build feels reassuringly solid, with controls that are easy to reach while composing a shot. It is certainly not a lens I forget is in my bag, and the weight becomes noticeable during longer sessions, but the balance on my Nikon Z body is comfortable enough for handheld portraits. I also appreciate the consistent results across the frame, especially when shooting at wider apertures where lesser lenses can struggle to maintain crisp detail away from the center.
Beyond portraits, I have found it useful for close-up details, stage performances, and isolating subjects in busy surroundings. The 135mm focal length gives me flattering perspective from a comfortable working distance, although it can feel restrictive in small rooms where there is little space to step back. For photographers who enjoy deliberate compositions, shallow depth of field, and rich subject separation, it is an impressive piece of glass that makes each session feel creatively rewarding.

Handling is reassuring too. It has some heft, but the build feels substantial and well suited to a professional camera body. The controls are easy to reach, and the customizable button is handy when I want quick access to a setting during a session. Manual adjustments also feel precise when I want more control over the final composition.

I have mostly used it for portraits, but it has also been enjoyable for details, events, and outdoor scenes where I want to isolate a particular subject. The 135mm focal length encourages me to look for different compositions than I would with a standard lens, and the results have given me plenty of shots I am happy to keep.

There is a certain discipline required with a lens like this because the focal length makes composition less forgiving, but once I settled into it, I found the perspective very rewarding. It has become a lens I reach for when I want separation, flattering portraits, and a distinctive sense of depth without relying on heavy editing.
